The Municipality of Lugano is publishing for another important architectural call for applications to reshape to the Piazzale Ex-Scuole, now considered as the main hub for public transportation in the region.
The project call aims to redefine this area, highlighting its current role as city’s gateway and enhancing its mission as urban square.
New arrangements will be necessary for services such as the terminus of the tram-train line, underground parking for bicycles and motorcycles and a commercial area, which can be used as a venue for temporary events. The symbolic link between the city centre and the adjacent neighborhoods will finally be represented by this strategic point after its redevelopment.
To accomplish these goals, it is essential to enhance the area's accessibility.
Thus, the call for proposals promotes, in addition to the minimum accessibility requirements imposed by the rules in force, the application of Design for All principles, whose utterance is also included among the evaluation criteria (for details see pp. 23 and 27 of the call).
In addition, the head of the Design for All Competence Centre will be present as a jury consultant.
The incorporation of UD concepts into a call for proposals in architecture and engineering, that is compliant with the SIA 142 regulation, marks a significant milestone.
